On Sunday 25th June I met with a group of interpreters in Grantham under the auspices of the Interpreters’ Development Network of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI). I am one of the local coordinators of this new network and it was our first social get-together in Lincolnshire. The network is aimed at both members and non-members of the ITI as well as interpreting students.
There were nine of us at this networking lunch and one of the guests was a lawyer from a local legal firm. In fact, the subject of law was very much the theme of the meeting as three colleagues have a qualification in addition to interpreting: in criminal law, in immigration and in employment.
On my part I introduced the issue of publishing online content. It undoubtedly has a lot of benefits for interpreters, ranging from websites showcasing our services, detailed LinkedIn profiles to tweeting. However, online publishing has its risks as all social media users are legally responsible for their writing so I shared a useful handout of pointers to bear in mind.
We also discussed the question of copyright for translators and interpreters and shared our own examples of how we dealt with it in our professional experience.
The event was one in a series of several to be held later this year across the UK, which will be duly publicised on the Facebook page for the network, so watch this space!
