Interest in family history continues to grow across the English-speaking world. From television programmes such as Who Do You Think You Are? to the increasing digitisation of archives, more people than ever are exploring their roots. As a result, many are discovering documents written in languages they cannot read.

On 21st May at 11 am (BST), I will be speaking at a webinar organised by the Chartered Institute of Linguists, titled The Art and Practice of Translating Historical Family Documents.

In this session, I’ll explore the practical and linguistic challenges involved in translating genealogical records, with references to real-life case studies. We will look at common record types, the role of historical context as well as the detective work required to decipher difficult handwriting. I’ll also touch on the role of AI tools and why professional judgement remains essential.
